Take Advantage of Section 179 to Invest in Your Laser Business

Savvy business owners take advantage of Section 179 when expanding or opening an aesthetic laser business. Whether you’re an entrepreneur launching your first laser clinic or are a seasoned practitioner ready to expand your services, meticulously planning and outlining your strategy leads to a successful start. And learning what Section 179 is and how to take advantage of this tax benefit to benefit your business is the best way to acquire capital investments.

Section 179 and How it Works

Section 179 is an IRS tax code that allows business owners to write off their capital equipment purchases as a business expense. This allows laser business owners to write off the entire capital investment in 2022, rather than smaller amounts over the next several years. In the past, business owners buying qualifying equipment typically wrote it off a little at a time through depreciation. For example, in years prior if you purchased a $60,000 device, you’d write off $12,000 per year for five years. And while any tax write-off is helpful, it’s even more fiscally beneficial to write off the entire equipment price in the year it was purchased.

“It’s an incentive created by the U.S. government to encourage business owners to buy equipment and invest in themselves”, according to the official Section 179 website.

It’s applicable to purchased, leased, and financed equipment, which is especially beneficial to entrepreneurs looking to open a laser tattoo removal business, hair removal clinic, or provide other aesthetic services.

Limits and Calculations of Section 179

There is a cap for the total amount allowed written off in 2022: $1,080,000. There’s also a limit to the total amount of equipment purchased in 2022: $2,700,000. At that point, the deduction begins to phase out after $2,700,000 is spent by any singular business on a dollar-for-dollar basis. This means the entire deduction goes away after reaching $3,780,000 in purchased qualifying equipment – making it a true small and medium-sized business deduction.

For example, say you purchase an aesthetic laser device for your business for $145,000 in 2022. Here’s how that tax deduction would work per the official Section 179 calculator:

Section 179 145k Example

Bonus Depreciation is offered some years, while in others it isn’t. The Bonus Depreciation offered in 2022 is 100% – meaning you can write off the entire equipment purchase in a singular taxable earnings year. Additionally, the most recent tax law that passed allows Bonus Depreciation to also cover previously used or certified pre-owned devices – as long as the device is new to you and your aesthetic laser business.

How to Save Before the Year’s End

If you purchase any qualifying equipment as an investment in a current or new aesthetic laser practice by December 31, 2022, you are able to write off the entire cost of the equipment (up to $1,080,000) on the 2022 tax return. NOTE: The qualifying equipment you purchase must also be placed into service by December 31, 2022 to be covered under the current Section 179 tax code.
