We’re kicking spring off with an amazing Show Off Your Shop feature highlighting Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal in Rochester, NY. Astanza prides itself on offering the best technology in the aesthetic laser industry, but it’s client relationships like these that make us shine.

Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal opened in the summer of 2022 and has quickly become a staple brand for removing unwanted ink in upstate New York. We interviewed owners Jordan Curran and Matthew Trenkler to learn more about the inspiration behind their business, how they’re giving back to the community, and more.

Tell us about yourselves.

Jordan: “My name is Jordan Curran. I am part owner of Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal. I’ve always been a passionate, driven person. I have a background in music. I’ve done music professionally and toured and wrote songs for some national artists and have always really had the drive and want to be an entrepreneur. This opportunity kind of unfolded, and it seemed right for me, and I was really excited to open up rethink with my good buddy Matt.”

Matthew: “My name is Matthew Trenkler. I’m also part owner of Rethink. I’ve always been really indecisive when it comes to getting a tattoo. And now I’m allowed to be more decisive about my decision to get a tattoo because if I don’t like it, I can remove it. So I love that. I’ve always wanted to work for myself. So this opened up the opportunity to do exactly that. I’m really excited to be a business owner with my friend Jordan, and it’s been a really exciting journey so far.”

As tattoos continue to grow in popularity, so does the demand for laser tattoo removal practitioners and businesses. Luckily, many entrepreneurs and tattoo enthusiasts like Jordan and Matt, who are passionate about transforming unwanted ink and helping others, can get certified as long as state regulations allow. Download our free ebook, Guide to Researching Laser Regulations in Your State, to learn more.

To show his commitment to the business, Matt decided his first tattoo would showcase the effectiveness of laser tattoo removal. He got 12 rectangles tattooed on his leg and will progressively fade each square with multiple laser sessions. Tell us about Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal and what makes you unique.

Jordan: “One of the reasons why I got into tattoo removal was because I was removing tattoos myself, and it opened up the door to open up a business. I think some of the things that make us unique are our bedside manner and our attention to detail with the appliance. We really care to lay out an accurate representation of what this process looks like. I know for people who don’t know much about tattoo removal, it can seem overwhelming. There’s a lot of information out there, and a lot of information is contradictory. We really take our time to go over the process, be very thorough with the client, and make sure that they’re comfortable and know what they’re getting into. I think our care and attention to detail, in that way, really sets us apart from other businesses.”

What is your practice’s aesthetic? How did you come up with the business name and logo?

Changing Lives Rethink Show Off Your Shop 1Jordan: “First off, it’s a medical procedure. So we wanted this place to feel very clean and comfortable for our clients to come in. Secondly, I kind of talked about my background. Rock and roll music. I love it. You know, it’s at my heart and soul. So we wanted to make it edgy and really appeal to people in that way too. Because, let’s be honest, it is a medical procedure, but some people just don’t want to go to a doctor-feeling kind of place, and a lot of the people that get tattoos are into the edginess of tattoos. So we really wanted to provide that as well. It’s all black and gold and a little rock star, but clean and professional as well. We really put a lot of time and thought into it. We came up with the name Rethink–it’s short, succinct, and to the point, and I really think it encapsulates what we’re doing here. Giving people a second chance at their bodies.”

Changing Lives Rethink Show Off Your Shop 2Upon entering Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal, you immediately get a sense of the rock and roll black and gold branding that Jordan describes. The practice is crisp, clean, and modern, with a well-lit area for the laser treatments. Pops of greenery also make an appearance, bringing life into the space. Jordan and Matt’s training certifications from New Look Laser College line the wall behind the reception desk, reassuring their clients that laser experts are treating them.

Can you tell us why you chose the Astanza TrinityTSR laser and what your partnership with Astanza has been like?

Jordan: “With everything with this business, we did a ton of research, and what we really liked about the devices, in particular, is they have the highest peak power out of any lasers on the market. They can treat stubborn ink in a way that we believe other lasers do not. And with all three wavelengths, we can safely and effectively treat any color on the color spectrum and remove tattoos quicker than what we feel other pieces of equipment can’t. But one of the biggest things that really drew us to Astanza is your support for growing entrepreneurs. You really helped us get a handle on marketing and launching our business and really being one on one consultants with us along the way. We’re two very smart people, and I believe that we could have done this on our own, but having you as resource has really just snowballed this whole process and made it so easy for us, so we’re very grateful to have you on our team.”

Matthew: “Yeah, it’s a really priceless resource. I mean the amount of times that we call you guys just for all the questions that we don’t know the answers to, that even Google doesn’t even know the answers to sometimes. And I love that I call you guys up, and you guys answer.”

Jordan: “I mean, I think at one point, I called Josh eight times in one day. I’m like, ‘I’m sorry, Josh.’”

Matthew: “He’s so cool about it, though. He’s like, ‘Hey man, that’s okay. That’s what I’m here for. That’s what we’re here for.’ You guys really helped us out so much. It really has been a valuable resource for us in every way.”

Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal uses the Astanza TrinityTSR system that combines the power of two fully-powered lasers, the Astanza Duality Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and the Astanza EternityTSR Q-switched ruby laser. As Jordan shares, the TrinityTSR can remove all tattoo colors, even resistant cool pigments like aquamarine and teal, and penetrates deep into the dermis for optimal ink shattering and fast removal. Furthermore, each laser is backed by the Astanza Experience, which provides foundational support from Astanza’s award-winning service, training, and marketing teams.

What is a #changinglives moment you’ve had? How have you positively impacted clients through laser tattoo removal?

Jordan: “I think the biggest moment for us came recently in our partnership with Safe Court. Safe Court is a division of the Rochester City Courts that deals exclusively with women who have been sex trafficked or sexually exploited. And a horrific aspect of that industry is a lot of times, the pimps or the captors or boyfriends, groomers, or whatever the situation is, whatever you want to call them, will brand these women to claim “ownership” over them. We just found that to be horrific. And I’ve always had a past of really loving to give back to the community. I’ve donated to homeless shelters and all that kind of stuff. But being a business owner really opened up the opportunity to give back in a much more impactful and profound way. So our partnership with Safe Court, the City Court will directly send us these women to remove these tattoos for free. And it’s really a way for us to give back to the community in the ways that they’ve given to us. Furthermore, we both have been severely impacted by cancer. You know, my mother passed away from cancer. His mother has been battling cancer for almost 20 years now, and it’s really hit our lives pretty significantly hard. So we remove breast cancer radiation markers for free. And we’ll also remove gang tattoos and hate tattoos, and racist tattoos for free as well. Launching those programs, on top of focusing on a successful business, really brings a wholeness to our business where we can get back to the community, and that’s been very profound for us.”
